A Herd of Swayne's Hartebeest This antelope is now endemic to Ethiopia, it was previously also living in Somalia but it is now extinct there. This herd is in the Sankele Swayne&#039;s Hartebeest Sanctuary which was established in 1972 specifically as the name suggests to provide a sanctuary for Swayne&#039;s Hartebeest. <br /> <br /> Since then the Ethiopian (world) population has continued to fall. There are currently approximately 500 animals in the sanctuary with up to another 1,000 animals in existence, in the Nechisar and Maze National Parks. The Swayne's Hartebeest

Swayne's hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus swaynei) is an endangered antelope native to Ethiopia. Two of the largest remaining populations are located in Senkelle Swayne's Hartebeest Sanctuary, Nechisar National Park and Maze National Park.
