Kea (parrot) in Antwerpen zoo
This bird is remarkable in a few ways. It is 1 of only 10 endemic birds in New Zealand. Throughout much of human history it has been killed on a large scale due to being considered a pest, the bird tends to feed on the back fat of cattle such as goats. Furthermore, it is the only alpine parrot in the world.
The bird is very curious by nature and highly approachable. In a wildlife documentary I recently watched, it was claimed that due to its friendly nature and due to evolution not giving it any meaningful way of defending itself, it stands little chance to predators, human or animal, introduced or native. Where most animals that lack defensive tools follow a 'flee' strategy, this bird does the opposite. It is naively curious.

The Kea is a large species of parrot found in forested and alpine regions of the South Island of New Zealand. About 48 cm long, it is mostly olive-green with a brilliant orange under its wings and has a large, narrow, curved, grey-brown upper beak.

It's also a New Zealand parrot, but not the same species as the Kea obviously. Posted 11 years ago
