  1. Gorgeous bird! I searched for more videos and found this one...My favorite part is around the 3 minute mark. I want to hear its calls, but my computer is not playing sound today.

    1. That's a really good video, added it to the species record.

As for calls, most birds-of-paradise are pretty simple and straightforward, they are basically crows with an evolutionary runaway effect.

      1. I just heard it (Dave fixed the sound issue in 2 seconds after I tried for 10 minutes). I expected better for the calls, but the bird more than makes up for it with its amazing features and behaviors. Posted one year ago
        1. An interesting fact that is not often mentioned:

Some people feel bad for what these males need to do just to find a mate. But the flip-side is that it really is all they do. They look great and dance. That's it. After mating, 100% of the care is on the female.

  4. Wonderful Ferdy, how long to get to it?? There's almost something "Wire-tailed Manakin-ish" about it. Posted one year ago
    1. Thanks! I think this was a 45 min hike from the road to get deeper into the forest. From there, a relatively short wait of 30 mins. This birds' location is relatively steady, it always attends the same tree. Posted one year ago
      1. Oh great, not too far then, I know they all have their territories & performance sites. Good! Posted one year ago

The king bird-of-paradise is a passerine bird of the Paradisaeidae family. It is considered by the IOC checklist to be the only member of the genus "Cicinnurus", although the genus "Diphyllodes" is closely related and is subsumed under "Cicinnurus" by many other authorities.
