The Deal: Kingfisher Mating Ritual. Past spring I was lucky enough to witness and capture a kingfisher mating.
No complains at all about that..
But from hearsay I understood that this mating thing is supposed to be preceded by a lovely ritual where the male offers a tasty fish to his wife-to-be...
And when she accepts.....the deal is done.
But 'my mating' just happened out of the blue. No kind gestures, no sweet seduction, just a few seconds of fun and it was over before I knew...
This time the opposite happened.....
The male offered a fish.
The female accepted and that was it...
1. If it wasn't for critical wives, many birds would not look as beautiful as they do :) Posted 14 years ago
    1. I wonder what this says about the human species...;) Posted 14 years ago
      1. Well, critical wives somewhat translates (no offense), yet male beauty not really. To me it seems that females are much more into showcasing beauty and diversity (just look at clothing). Could be cultural though. Posted 14 years ago
        1. I know my own species, so I know what you mean.
It's an interesting thing indeed to see that most animals have beautiful males to impress the ladies, only with humans it's the other way around (no offense :D)...
Oh well, like I said : nature comes in mysterious ways...;)

          1. There's also species where males do not compete by beauty but by power, muscle and determination. Seems that translates better to humans :) Posted 14 years ago

The Common Kingfisher is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.
