  1. And that's the fifth and last Pharomachrus quetzal for me! By far the rarest of Peru's three quetzals, this is the lowland species. But I was lucky to be in prime habitat for it last month, and perhaps at the peak of breeding season. I heard singing males every day and multiple times they would fly right in in response to playback. This is the only time one of them posed on a reasonably low perch, allowing for a decent pic. The pavonine quetzal is a species of bird in the family Trogonidae, the trogons. The pavonine quetzal lives in the Neotropics, more specifically in the northern region of the Amazon basin, spreading from Colombia to Bolivia.
