Blicks Grass-rat
This Ethiopian endemic is abundant on the Sanetti Plain but its survival is adjudged to be threatened because of habitat loss. The Bale Mountains were established as the centre of a National Park in 1970 and inscribed as a World Heritage Site in September 2023. We saw cattle and goat herds grazing on the Sanetti Plain along with unaccompanied domestic dogs. The Blick's Grass-rat is a major food source for the Ethiopian Wolf and this area of land over 4,000 metres is very vulnerable to over-grazing. It is a stark and beautiful place.
Blick's grass rat is a species of rodent in the family Muridae. It is found only in Ethiopia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland. It is threatened by habitat loss.
