Northern cassowary - head, Nimbokrang, Papua The prehistoric-looking Northern cassowary, endemic to Northern New Guinea. It can be visually distinguished from the Southern cassowary by its golden-colored neck patch.

This individual was poached as a chick after which the guesthouse owner of where we were staying purchased it to conserve it. It has grown a lot since. It's supposed to be picked up by the forestry department for release in the wild, but they're taking their sweet time.
1. Did you know that they can eat poisonous berries? The reason is because food moves very quickly through their digestive system and a lot of it gets pooped out before it is even digested. Posted one year ago
    1. I did not know that! I guess that confirms the beginning of the above video where they are praised for spreading seeds to effectively. Posted one year ago
      1. Yes, exactly! They also have to eat a lot in order to get enough nutrition since they poop it all out so quickly. Posted one year ago
