While the male typically gets all the attention for its flashy colours, there is incredible subtle beauty in the iridescence on the back feathers and top of the head, and the deep blues of the wing tips of the female. Female Wood Duck photographed at Mud Lake, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on 1 Apr 2021.       Isn't she? I was busy trying to get good shots of the showy males, but realized how nice the females looked in the light, and I'm glad I was able to capture the colours on her feathers. Posted one year ago

        Indeed, I find both male and female very cute. And I am happy that there are so many in the wild because when you think of alikes, e.g. mandarin duck they are nowadays mostly ornamental (I don't know if they are found in the wild maybe in Asia). I lived in Boston for a few years and I used to see many wood ducks when kayaking in the Charles River, it was awesome! Posted one year ago
