Red-Tailed Hawk with prey, Ottawa Canada, 20 Mar 2021
Red-tailed Hawk photographed at Vincent Massey Park in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on 20 Mar 2021.
I was at the park a few days earlier and saw two hawks fly through. I came back on this day hoping to spot them again and I was very lucky to spot one of them again. It was circling around an open area of the park with some sort of string or straw or fibre in its mouth. As I was taking pictures of it another hawk (this one) showed up and they both circled for a while before flying off. It wasn't until I got home and looked through my pictures that I noticed that this one was carrying prey. I don't know what prey it is, but I suspect it may be a vole.

The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk," though it rarely preys on standard sized chickens. It breeds throughout most of North America, from western Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies, and is one of the most common buteos in North America.
