Pileated Woodpecker, Ottawa, Canada, 20 Feb 2021 Male Pileated Woodpecker photographed at Vincent Massey Park in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, 20 Feb 2021. I love his foot in the foreground (not hard to believe birds came from dinosaurs seeing that) and the chip of wood in the air above his beak. He is male based on the red "moustache" by his beak. 1. Nice that you could catch a close up! Here we have some alike species but they are always high in the trees and we are lucky to just see a few glimpses of red :-) Posted one year ago
    1. I was very lucky to have this male work away at a hole not too far up a tree I was fairly close to. I was new to birding at that time and had no idea how lucky I was! I haven't had such good fortune since. Posted one year ago

The Pileated Woodpecker is a very large North American woodpecker, roughly crow-sized, inhabiting deciduous forests in eastern North America, the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada, and parts of the Pacific coast. It is also the largest woodpecker in the United States, excepting the possibly extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker.
