The Small Tortoiseshell
Another remarkable butterfly with some beautiful markings. Can you see the little bug on the flower too? The common nettle is used for caterpillar food. On the organic farm where I work we grow these for a variety of reasons, including green manure. The Large Tortoiseshell unlike the Small is elusive and an extreme rarity in the UK.
