  1. This species (considered by some to merely be subspecies of O. spruneri, which I will upload tomorrow) is notable for having some of the largest flowers in the genus, reaching nearly 3 cm across.
Antonis Alibertis, one of Greece's orchid experts, had given me directions to a good spot to look for it, but because he is very old school, he doesn't use GPS coordinates, so it was along the lines of "you'll see an abandoned field on your right, then a line of trees to your left, then walk down along the fence until the second curve ", etc. But he ended by telling me: "you'll know when you see them".
And indeed, after half an hour of walking up and down a hill covered with hundreds if not thousands of blooming orchids, I was getting nervous because the light was starting to fade. But suddenly I spotted a massive black blotch, easily twice the size of any other Ophrys and I immediately knew - that's it!
