Red-bellied Woodpecker The Red-Bellied Woodpecker is a rare visitor to my backyard. I feed many birds and I have to say that he is the most reclusive. When he does stop by, he is extremely timid and it takes very little movement to make him fly away. Needless to say, it was hard to capture him on camera; I actually had to take the picture through my window! The Red-bellied Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker of the Picidae family. It breeds in southern Canada and the northeastern United States, ranging as far south as Florida and as far west as Texas. Its common name is somewhat misleading, as the most prominent red part of its plumage is on the head; the Red-headed Woodpecker, however, is another species that is a rather close relative but looks quite different.
