Common Linnet (Female) Sorry this is not a very good photograph at all, one day if I am lucky enough to get closer I will replace it. I have never seen a Linnet before even though they have been regular visitors to the Organic farm I work at. There were several of these birds gathered together in the tree, they would drop out of the tree and go to ground searching for food, it was amazing to watch but it was not until today I knew what I had been watching. 1. I for years did not know a thing about the birds in my garden until I became aware, mostly due to the sport of identifying them here. Excellent species intro! Posted 11 years ago
    1. Isn't it a fantastic hobby (obsession) when you do know what you have seen because of all the research you can end up doing to make an identification. I love it and love learning so much about our beautiful nature. Thanks for lovely comments :) Posted 11 years ago

The Common Linnet is a small passerine bird of the finch family, Fringillidae. It derives its scientific name from its fondness for hemp and its English name from its liking for seeds of flax, from which linen is made.
