Wagtail (either Pied or White) I am unsure as to whether this is a Pied Wagtail or a White Wagtail, it was as though it was resting, most unlike the Pied Wagtail that is usually very busily going to and fro along the pavements and roads nearby, if anyone could confirm it would be great Birds,Geotagged,Motacilla alba,United Kingdom,White Wagtail Click/tap to enlarge Country intro

  1. Both are subspecies of the same species Motacilla alba. If you look at the Wiki page, there is a nice table describing all the different subspecies, but it is all messed up in the JD species page. Great Britain and Ireland are within the range of the black pied wagtail - Motacilla alba yarrellii.

    1. Yes I did read through that article but still could not make my mind up because it really looks like a White Wagtail to me :) Posted 11 years ago

The white wagtail is a small passerine bird in the wagtail family Motacillidae, which also includes the pipits and longclaws. This species breeds in much of Europe and Asia and parts of north Africa. It is resident in the mildest parts of its range, but otherwise migrates to Africa. It has a toehold in Alaska as a scarce breeder. In the British Isles the darker sub-species the pied wagtail predominates.
