
Clavate Tortoise Beetle Larva - Plagiometriona clavata
ISO 100 is laughable for this photo. With the wildfire smoke/haze and rain clouds, it was so gloomy. I should have paid closer attention to my camera settings!
Tortoise beetle larvae carry cast skins and feces on their backs - attached to spines arising from the posterior end of their body, a structure called an "anal fork." The anal fork holds the debris in place, forming a fecal shield that deters predation.
