Ringed Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates hornbyi)

  1. One of the prettiest storm-petrels, and the one I was most hoping to see on this trip!
The species' nesting grounds were unknown until 2017, when it was finally confirmed that unlike nearly all other pelagic seabirds, which nest on remote oceanic islands, these little birds breed in the Atacama desert, one of the driest places on the planet!

      1. Thanks!
I'm going on another pelagic in two weeks. At this point I've seen most of the expected species in Peruvian waters, but that's the fun of these trips: there's always the chance of something really unexpected :)

The ringed storm petrel is a seabird that ranges in the Humboldt Current off the coasts of South America. The species is a very distinctive member of the storm petrel family, with a dark cap, white face and underparts, forked tail and a black band across the chest. It is relatively common in the seas off Peru, Chile and Ecuador.
