Amber dosing in a Cambara tree above the Rio Três Irmãos The jaguars in and around the rivers above Porto Jofre are named as part of a jaguar study. If anyone submits a photo of a jaguar that has not previously been seen, then whoever submits it, gets the opportunity to name that jaguar. This was Amber, we saw her 2, 2 year old cubs Stella and Woody during the trip. We did also have the opportunity to name a large male, a day later and we called him Raul after our brilliant guide. 1. Fatally cute!

How are they identified from a distance? By pattern?

    1. Yes agreed. Also yes to pattern. They're all easily identified with a half decent photograph, especially to the experts there. See photos of Amber's 2 cubs Woody & Stella below. You'll see even in siblings where some pattern lines are relatively similar, they are quite distinctive & of course there's the relative size of the male to the female plus the darker/lighter coats. The same can be said when comparing Amber and Woody to their mother, Amber. Hope that looks clear?

Woody, Amber's 2 year old male cub Woody & Amber were following the river bank, note the difference in colour and pattern of his coat from that of his sister, Stella. Jaguar,Mato Grosso,Pantanal,Panthera onca,Rio Três Irmãos

The jaguar is a big cat, a feline in the "Panthera" genus, and is the only "Panthera" species found in the Americas. The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The jaguar's present range extends from Southern United States and Mexico across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina.
