Otoglossum scansor is an unusual member of the Oncidium alliance; it is an epiphyte that produces 12 to 20 meters of wirey-woody, flexuous stems carrying well spaced, adventitious plantlets and inflorescences. It is found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in wet montane forests on shrubs and low branches in shade to direct sunlight at elevations of 750 to 1950 meters.
