It is smaller than a Zebra finch.
This subspecies is found in the mountains of Vogelkop to Owen Stanley Range.
Because of the lack of termite mounds in the highlands where the lowland species make nests and breed, these do as most of the other parrot species , they breed in excavated nests in trees.

The red-breasted pygmy parrot is a species of parrot in the family Psittaculidae. Its natural habitat is the boreal forests, subtropical or tropical dry forests, and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests of the Maluku Islands and Melanesia.
