  1. Are you sure they are called Jabiru?

They look different to me, but possibly it's a local nickname.

    1. I was confused about this bird myself, so I went to my reference book Field Guide to Australian Birds, just to be sure & it says The Black-necked Stork Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus "This tall stately stork with massive bill is commonly known as Jabiru." I agree it does look different to me, the Aboriginal people that I spoke to, call it the Jabiru. Very confusing. Posted 11 years ago
      1. Thanks for the explanation, looks like a coincidence in local names. Posted 11 years ago

The Black-necked Stork is a tall long-necked wading bird in the stork family. It is a resident species across South and Southeast Asia with a disjunct population in Australia. It lives in wetland habitats to forage for a wide range of animal prey. Adult birds of both sexes have a heavy bill and are patterned in white and glossy blacks, but the sexes differ in the colour of the iris.
