pied butcherbird juvenile
coffs harbour nsw
this juvenile butcherbird was doing a spot of beachcombing while the parents watched on from a nearby tree as you can see his brown colouring slowly turning to the black and white plumage of an adult bird...earning his colours so to speak, considered the finest songbird in australia by many the hauntingly flute like song an iconic sound of the australian bush!

The pied butcherbird is a songbird native to Australia. Described by John Gould in 1837, it is a black and white bird 28 to 32 cm long with a long hooked bill. Its head and throat are black, making a distinctive hood; the mantle and much of the tail and wings are also black.
