  2. Here is some more Salmo trutta love:

Brown Trout Mug Up close and personal with a female brown trout. We (the biologist I was working with and myself) sampled this trout while completing a population survey on the Priest River, Idaho. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to take a click, as I never catch fish like this myself! This fish was released unharmed. 1. I was surprised to see that you had introduced this European species.
It is a very tasty fish by the way. In Bulgaria there are special pools by the rivers where they are reared for consumption.

      1. They are quite a popular game fish in North America. They have been introduced into just about every major cold/cool watershed where trout live. They are hardier than many of the native trout here and adapt very well. They are a rather interesting fish; the trout in the picture above I sampled while conducting a population analysis with a state fish and game department. Posted 11 years ago
        1. That's the definition for invasive species. Hopefully, they would not outcompete and eventually destroy the native species. Posted 11 years ago
          1. You are so right! In many systems they already have. They are far superior in every way when compared to our native brook, rainbow and cutthroat trout. But there are many programs that are working to return these systems back to their once natural states, which include removal of invasives. It is a long, slow process, and sometimes not worth it, but other times it is! Posted 11 years ago

The brown trout is an originally European species of salmonid fish. It includes both purely freshwater populations, referred to "Salmo trutta" morpha "fario" and "S. trutta" morpha "lacustris", and anadromous forms known as the sea trout, "S. trutta" morpha "trutta". The latter migrates to the oceans for much of its life and returns to freshwater only to spawn.
