Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia An active volcano at elevation 5,321m. It is notorious for a 1985 event where an eruption led to a mud stream down the flanks of the volcano that would erase the town of Armero (situated a stunning 5,000m lower), leaving 23,000+ death. Especially tragic was that those in the know of it coming, failed to get through to the national and local authorities whom framed it as &quot;scaremongering&quot;. Next, as it became absolutely sure that the town would be hit, the town&#039;s electricity grid failed, making communication impossible.<br />

  1. Beautiful volcano, but horrifying story! We just finished a chapter on volcanism for Noah's science and it didn't even mention this eruption, which is disturbing. Posted 15 days ago
    1. I honestly had not heard of it either, although I'm not well studied on volcanoes. Other remarkable fact: the town of Armero was built on the destruction of the previous town that was there which was built on the town before that. It seems a structurally unsafe area.

The day after this photo, we drove down all the way to 300m, taking several hours. I still struggle to connect the dots. How this ultra high elevation structure can so dramatically affect something that feels so incredibly far away.
