Spanish festoon (Zerynthia rumina)
I know this is not a great photo, since the butterfly is quite far away. Alas, at that time I only had my 105mm lens with me, but I was super excited to encounter this beauty so I had to at least snap a picture with what I had. Actually, the species is quite common in various local patches on the Iberian peninsula, but as Wikipedia says “is an extremely striking species” - indeed!
Luckily some years later when I encountered its “cousin” (Southern Festoon) in Slovenia, I was better prepared…

The Spanish Festoon, "Zerynthia rumina", is a butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae. It is a widespread species in Spain and frequents most habitats.
