Botta's gopher
Freaked out a coworker and he kicked it. It's not how it died though. I saw puncture marks in the lower abdominal area. We have a lot of cats at work. Most are black and the tortie mom, after 15 kittens from 3 litters, is fixed. I'm assuming it was one of the black cats because that poor gopher found where I saw one of the cats earlier in the area.
Botta's pocket gopher is a pocket gopher native to western North America. It is also known in some sources as valley pocket gopher, particularly in California. Both the specific and common names of this species honor Paul-Émile Botta, a naturalist and archaeologist who collected mammals in California in the 1820s and 1830s.
