Hippopotamus hideout, Northern Serengeti
A view from our accommodation in Northern Serengeti on the hippo-dominated river. When the sun sets, they actually come to the accommodation to graze, which is potentially dangerous. We were face to face with such a hippo in the night after returning from the restaurant, at only 10m away. Luckily it paid no attention to us.

The hippopotamus, or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae. The name comes from the ancient Greek for "river horse". After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl.
