A hungry Tayra Tayras are such interesting mammals. They&#039;re basically large weasels and watching them hunt is a little unnerving. They&#039;re fast, strong, and a bit intimidating when in a large group.<br />

Tayras are such interesting mammals. They're basically large weasels and watching them hunt is a little unnerving. They're fast, strong, and a bit intimidating when in a large group.

I've never had much luck getting a good photo of one until just recently when a pair was climbing trees looking for nests to raid.

    1. A few years ago I was waiting out a torrential rainstorm in Costa Rica under a covered platform, and a family group of eight of these came through on the hunt. I guess they're typically more solitary. When I got this shot, there were a pair hunting together. Posted 11 days ago

The tayra is an omnivorous animal from the weasel family, native to the Americas. It is the only species in the genus "Eira".
