  1. I am wondering if these are actually Asiatic Lions in which case the species should be corrected. These are not just ordinary lions, but extremely rare ones! Posted 11 years ago
    1. Hi Claire,
I tried looking up for the difference between the two species. But just by looking at the pic, its a little difficult to distinguish between them. I did find a reputed newspaper article stating that the Lions in the Bannerghatta National Park are "hybrids and not pure races of the African Lion or the Asian Lion". PFB the link.

      1. I see what you mean Avinash and more recent reports do not always make it clear either. The Asiatic lion studbook does list Bannerghatta as having four Asiatic lions but there is no guarantee that this is one of them. It appears that the only wild populations of Asiatic lions are in Gir Forest. Perhaps you would like to take a little holiday to Gir to get us some photos??? Posted 11 years ago
  2. Clarie's Suggestion to visit Gir forest is really a good idea. Good attempt ! Posted 11 years ago
  3. :D.. LOL... I suppose I could manage a week's vacation without being strangled to death by my manager.. Posted 11 years ago
  4. Yes Avinash, go find us the proof and resolve this mystery. We're all counting on you. Posted 11 years ago

The lion is one of the five big cats in the genus "Panthera" and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.
