This dapper fellow was discovered two weeks ago less than an hour away from my hometown, a first record for France and only the 7th time that the species has been recorded in the Western Palearctic. Take a look at its distribution map to get a sense of how lost it was (https://ebird.org/species/gyttat1 ).
I got home Saturday night and originally planned on going to look for it today, combining the outing with a couple errands in town. But the forecast for today was crappy while the sun was shining yesterday afternoon, so I decided to hop in my car and head down to the coast, where I soon found it (it was very easy, I just had to look for the guys with the spotting scopes), and was able to watch it for an hour as it foraged at the water's edge.
And, to top it all off, other birders went to look for it today... and it apparently was gone! Posted 2 years ago, modified 2 years ago
