Female Titan stick insect- Fraser coast Qld Australia Hi I found magpies attacking this guy. I covered it and returned as I was on an errand. The end of its tail was badly damaged. It appeared to be breathing heavily. I hid it amongst a pile of leaves, branches and twigs hoping it would survive. Would it survive this type of injury? It was so big - it was magnificent!! 1. Welcome to JungleDragon, Penelope and thanks for sharing this photo. I have no idea if this insect could survive its injury, but think you did a kind thing in trying to help it. I once found a dragonfly that had lost its entire abdomen and yet it was still flying around, albeit not as well. So, you never know. But, whether it lives or dies, keep in mind that it is part of nature and thus part of the food web. The birds have to eat too and so on. I hope it survived, though! <3 Posted 2 years ago
  2. Thanks Christine - I have confirmed it’s a female titan stick insect. I have an extremely abundant ecosystem on my property with dozens of native birds, dragons, and loads of insects. I did consider the magpies would enjoy this meal but there is plenty of food around for them. In the end they may well have got her anyways which is good for them but if she lives a little longer then that’s good too : )

    1. Sounds lovely! The magpies certainly won't suffer from the loss of a meal. ;) Posted 2 years ago

"Acrophylla titan", the titan stick insect, is the second-longest stick insect found in Australia. It is native to south-east Queensland and New South Wales.
