White-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus)
Nature in my “backyard” - I live close to the river Isar that flows through Munich, where I went for a walk today.
Encountering a white-throated dipper in the morning hours in that spot, when the river beds are not yet swarming with people, is not that unusual. But it's always a sight that gladdens the nature lover's heart, since this bird is highly specialised on swiftly flowing waters, ideally with rocks or other outcroppings for perches. They are usually also rather picky when it comes to water quality. So seeing a white-throated dipper within a city of well over 1 million inhabitants does feel a bit special.
The white-throated dipper is an aquatic passerine bird found in Europe, Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. The species is divided into several subspecies, based primarily on colour differences, particularly of the pectoral band. The white-throated dipper is Norway's national bird.
