  1. One of the avian emblems of Peru, this endemic guan very nearly went extinct, but was saved in extremis by a captive breeding program and outreach programs. But conserving and restoring the dry forests where it dwells will be the key to its long term survival.
    Most people see them at Chaparri, the home of the breeding program, where they are as tame as chickens. I was much happier to see these truly wild individuals, furtively clambering in the trees after a three hour walk in a remote dry riverbed.

    1. I've actually had pretty good luck with guans in Peru so far, including a very very tame Bearded Guan in the far north near the border with Ecuador. I'll upload the photo eventually haha Posted 2 years ago

The white-winged guan is a bird in the chachalaca, guan and curassow family Cracidae. It is endemic to northwestern Peru.
