Female small emperor moth (Saturnia pavonia}
The adult individuals of this species of the Saturniidae family only live for about one week around April and May. Since they do not have any mouthparts for feeding, their sole purpose is procreation.
The males are diurnal, while the nocturnal females just stay seated during the day and attract males by emitting pheromones.

The Small Emperor Moth is a moth of the family Saturniidae. Sometimes, the incorrect genus name "Pavonia" is still used for this species. This moth occurs throughout the Palearctic region and is the only member of its family to be found in the British Isles where it is usually called simply the Emperor Moth.
