
Lesser purple emperor (Apatura ilia)
This butterfly is always a welcome sight for its somewhat showy appearance. What made this find a bit special was the date: May 30th (2014) is quite early for this species to appear. Although the upper Rhine region between Kaiserstuhl and Strasbourg is know for its temperate climate, which might have aided this individual's early development.

"Apatura ilia", the lesser purple emperor, is a species of butterfly native to most of Europe and temperate Asia. It is named for its similarity to the purple emperor butterfly.
