Canary red admiral (Vanessa vulcania) This butterfly is related to the fairly common Red admiral (Vanessa atalanta), which is found in temperate regions of North Africa, North and Central America, Europe, Asia, and island regions of Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Only that this species is endemic to the Canary Islands and Madeira.<br />
Since the Canary red admiral looks very similar to the Indian red admiral (Vanessa indica), it used to be considered a subspecies of the latter, until more detailed research established it as its own species. Canary red admiral (Vanessa vulcania)

Vanessa vulcania is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is found on the Canary Islands and Madeira. Previously, it was considered a subspecies of "Vanessa indica", but has been raised to species level after research by Leestmans in 1992.
