  1. A massive oversight from my 2020 photos! Called the Inca Eagle in Spanish, this is one of the greatest eagles of the Andes, rivalled in size only by the Solitary Eagle.
An endangered species, it is rare throughout its range, but the Yanachaga Chemillén NP probably has the largest and certainly the best-studied population in Peru, in large parts thanks to my friend Daniel Orizano, a specialist with the park who has a near supernatural talent for finding raptor nests. I'd seen it in flight over the mountains a few times, but on that day, Daniel took me and another friend on a grueling 6 hour hike on a barely marked trail up a nearly vertical and incredibly slippery slope (always a tricky proposition when wearing rubber boots). Finally, right around noon, we quietly settled down on a ridge and were able to observe both the female sitting on her nest and her mate coming in to a tree nearby right at eye level, resulting in one of the greatest raptor encounters I've ever had!

    1. Glad you came across it in the archive, would not want to have missed it. The scene is stunning, like being right there. Beautiful cloud forest decorations too. Posted 2 years ago

The black-and-chestnut eagle is a South American species of bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. It is sometimes called Isidor's eagle. It is often placed in the monotypic genus "Oroaetus". However, recent genetic testing indicates that this species is fairly closely related to "Spizaetus" species and thus the species should be included in that genus.
