Over the years, we&#039;ve encountered this viper three times. Never did it show any active aggression, rather a defensive irritation due to the meeting itself. Still, it&#039;s not a snake to joke around with. There&#039;s a major difference between seeing one as a visitor and having one in your backyard, with pets and young children around.<br />

    1. The leaf is huge, possibly a dried up Gunnera sp. if I had to guess.
      That said, these snakes aren't that big either, in this curled up state I'd guess you're looking at about 50cm.

"Bothrops asper" is a highly venomous pit viper species ranging from southern Mexico to northern South America. Sometimes referred to as the "ultimate pit viper", these snakes are found in a wide range of lowland habitats, often near human habitations.
