Colombia's most notorious snake, above all because it is often found near human settlements. Over the years, we've encountered this viper three times. Never did it show any active aggression, rather a defensive irritation due to the meeting itself. Still, it's not a snake to joke around with. There's a major difference between seeing one as a visitor and having one in your backyard, with pets and young children around.

"Bothrops asper" is a highly venomous pit viper species ranging from southern Mexico to northern South America. Sometimes referred to as the "ultimate pit viper", these snakes are found in a wide range of lowland habitats, often near human habitations.

That said, these snakes aren't that big either, in this curled up state I'd guess you're looking at about 50cm. Posted 18 days ago
