Rio Negro Silky Anteater (Cyclopes ida) This was a lucky observation, and it only briefly uncurled from its nap so that I could capture a photo of its face. Unfortunately, these amazing animals are often captured and resold for the pet market, so they're very, very rare to see in the wild. The silky anteater has traditionally been considered a single species of anteater, "Cyclopes didactylus", in the genus "Cyclopes", the only living genus in the family Cyclopedidae. Found in southern Mexico, and Central and South America, it is the smallest of all known anteaters.
