Speckled Wood Butterfly (Pararge aegeria)
Not a rare species today, having made a spectacular comeback following a dramatic collapse in numbers during the early years of the 20th century.
The specific reason for this post lies in the accompanying video in which you can witness one of P aegeria's unusual behavioural traits, of which it has several.
The behaviour shown in the clip is called 'thanatosis'.
If you don't know what that is, or simply want to watch 'thanatosis' in 'action' ("or not", he says with a knowing smile) click here:
The speckled wood is a butterfly found in and on the borders of woodland areas throughout much of the Palearctic realm. The species is subdivided into multiple subspecies, including "Pararge aegeria aegeria", "Pararge aegeria tircis", "Pararge aegeria oblita", and "Pararge aegeria insula".

I knew about the behaviour, but didn't know any butterfly species did it. Posted 2 years ago
