Gymnopilus penetrans
*Gymnopilus penetrans is either very similar (but, separate) to G. sapineus or possibly conspecific. I created a species record for G. penetrans, but am still being booted back to G. sapineus.
Substrate: Growing on well-rotten wood – most likely hardwood because I didn’t see any conifers in the area.
Habitat: Mesic, deciduous forest with a stream and pond nearby
"Gymnopilus sapineus", commonly known as Scaly Rustgill, is a small and widely distributed mushroom which grows in dense clusters on dead conifer wood. It has a rusty orange spore print and a bitter taste. It is unclear at this time whether or not this species or its relatives contain the hallucinogen psilocybin.
