  1. 2,933 species and counting, of which you added quite a lot lately. Great work, Sunil! Posted 11 years ago
    1. JD is inspiration for me to go in search of new species everytime I go out for photography. Thank you Ferdy for your continuous encouragement and compliments. Posted 11 years ago
      1. And it is a huge inspiration to me that this site changes photographers in such a way that they become species-aware, collectors of species even. Posted 11 years ago
        1. Yes, you are right. Earlier I had photographed many birds, but never checked which speci it was ..after joining JD I started investigating and recognising them. My friends wonder howcome I recognise the birds just looking at them. That makes me proud of myself and I thank for JD for that. :) Posted 11 years ago
          1. I just love that effect it has. I have the same thing. On our travels I even keep a book and bother rangers endlessly until I know the name of a species. It's like a collecting hobby :) Posted 11 years ago
    2. This account has many wrong ids including this one(which gave it species intros). There isn't any yellow bellied ashy prinia in Southern side of India Posted 9 years ago
      1. Abhitap there is no rule that they travel to south india or not, and I have not captured them from somewhere else and posted here, if you have clear information on the species then only change it or else leave it as it is. Posted 9 years ago
        1. Hi Sunil,

The yellow-bellied prinia has a really clear yellow belly, plus a white throat (http://orientalbirdimages.org/images/data/prinia_yb_8509.jpg)
as opposed to the ashy prinia (which your bird is), with the more peach colored belly and breast.

As for distributions, the birdlife maps are usually quite reliable.
And indeed the yellow-bellied prinia is not found in southern India.

        2. Agree sir that I should only change species when I am very much sure about it and I did it sir, because I am sure about its id.
As pointers given by Thibaud sir it is clearly Ashy Prinia.

Regarding your query of the rule to whether birds fly south or not: Many bird species are classified on Tue basis of migration too sir and it also marks their distribution.
For e.g. Residents, Winter migrants, Passage migrants etc.
And as Link given by sir Aronson you can check distribution of Ashy Prinia vs distribution of yellow bellied Prinia

I hope all your doubts will get cleared after having look at the distribution map

          Regards,

          1. When I find some new species, first thing I search with their appearances and check them in WIKI then only I go and recognise them, I saw that you have changed the Common Iora to Lesser Gold finch which i had investigated that these species are mostly found in US and its looks and appearances gave me the clue that it is Iora, also one more Purple rumped sunbird, i had already identified these species why was that removed and again identified ? If there is something which you have correct info, which I have identifies then go ahead and make the changes. I appreciate your knowledge but do let me know, what are you studying ? Posted 9 years ago
            1. Yes I think there is confusion.
I have changed lesser gold finch(named by you ) to common Iora.
              Regarding purple rumped Sunbird sir
You identified it as Southern Double collared Sunbird which I removed and corrected as Purple rumped Sunbird.

So there is no case where you have already identified right bird and I removed it and identified again.

I just checked and your caption still says scientific name of southern double collared Sunbird.

              Sir I study Environmental Sciences

The Ashy Prinia or Ashy Wren-Warbler is a small warbler. This prinia is a resident breeder in the Indian Subcontinent, ranging across most of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and western Myanmar. It is a common bird in urban gardens and farmland in many parts of India and its small size, distinctive colours and upright tail make it easy to identify.
