Lioness portrait near water stream, Serengeti
Portrait of a lioness that just fed on a Warthog, and is now cooling down near a small stream of water. Captured in Central Serengeti.
On a technical note, this image is a good demo of what a camera like the D800 can do. This crop is only 10% of the original image, yet still has tons of detail. This kind of extreme cropping is possible due to the many pixels, yet only works when the original is really sharp. Even the tiniest movement would not allow one to crop this way.

The lion is one of the five big cats in the genus "Panthera" and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.
