Devil's Garden, Caquetá, Colombia
We were attending a path long abandoned, requiring lots of machete action to move forward. When we saw this unexpected clearing in the forest, we recognized it from an earlier trip as to be a Devil's Garden. The thin trees in the middle host a species of ant that will poison any seedlings in the immediate surroundings. In return, the tree provides shelter and food for the ants.

"Duroia hirsuta" is a myrmecophyte tree species from the Amazon Forest. It is one of some 37 species of "Duroia" which are shrubs or canopy trees in the family Rubiaceae, favouring ants, and occurring in Central America as far north as Mexico, the Amazon Basin, the Guiana Shield, the Brazilian Atlantic coast and planalto.
