
The rufous-headed woodpecker is a species of bird in the family Picidae. It formerly included Kaempfer's woodpecker as a subspecies. It is found in the western Amazon basin in northern Bolivia, far southwestern Brazil, eastern Ecuador, and eastern Peru. Its natural habitats are tropical humid forests and woodland. It is often associated with bamboo.

But most exciting was the sighting itself. This is a bird that is normally found in dense bamboo or cane thickets, typically rare, and often very hard to see well. Whereas this guy came out of nowhere, in open varzea, without us using playback or anything. Even more remarkable, this is the first record for Amazonas department! The nearest known records are in Putumayo, near the base of the Andes, or several hundred kilometers upstream along the Amazon, near Iquitos in Peru! Posted 2 years ago
