  1. Colombia is the country with the highest number of curassow species (10 out of the 15 extant species), and while this one is far from the rarest, it certainly is one of the least reported in the country! No great mystery there, it's simply because the species' range barely extends into far southeastern Colombia. There are only 10 sightings for the country, all of them in the Amazonas department. What is more surprising is that we were in an area that is often visited by some of Colombia's best birders, and ours was the first sighting of the curassow!
As we were making our way down the channel, we saw them fly across the water and instantly lost our minds! We landed some 30 meters upstream of where we'd seen them land, and stealthily walked in a great semi-circle, trying to anticipate the direction of their movement. I say we, but all credit goes to my guide Otto, I never would have gotten it right!
And sure enough, after a couple minutes, he spotted one bird in a tree! It was quite wary but seemed reluctant to move too far, acting as sentinel while its unseen mate foraged nearby. We managed a few decent shots and then let him be, as we heard another target bird singing nearby. We had no luck with the other bird, but suddenly Otto tapped my shoulder and pointed upwards. Somehow, the curassow had moved to another tree without us noticing, and we'd ended up right below him! He allowed us a few more photos, and then flew back across the river, signaling the end of a very exciting encuonter/photo session!
