  1. A bit of an upgrade on my previous photo of that species :)
    Light conditions were fading fast, he only hung around for about a minute, and I still haven't gotten the photo I want from this handsome fellow, but I'll get there!

    1. Only from this photo does the name become clear to me. I think I've always misread it as wire-tailed, because the tail is so thin. With this obvious crest shot my language processor is finally working again. For now. Posted 2 years ago

The wire-crested thorntail is a hummingbird which occurs in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. These birds feed on nectar from flowers using a long extendable tongue, or catch insects on the wing. They require frequent feeding while active during the day and become torpid at night to conserve energy.
