  1. What a beauty, and a species new to JungleDragon. Well done, Stephen! Posted 11 years ago
  2. Stephen, I think you've got a black-tailed godwit here. In a bar-tailed, the bill would be shorter and a bit upturned, the legs would be shorter, and the plumage more streaked.

    1. Thanks for that. Not easy for me to tell the two apart but I am pretty sure the bill confirms it is as you said a black-tailed godwit. Posted 6 years ago
      1. They sure are tricky! I actually was in the Netherlands recently and saw a bunch of them. Distant birds in particular were quite a headache!
By the by, the white belly contrasting with the brick-colored throat is another good sign pointing to black-tailed.

The Black-tailed Godwit, "Limosa limosa", is a large, long-legged, long-billed shorebird first described by Carolus Linnaeus in 1758. It is a member of the "Limosa" genus, the godwits. There are three subspecies, all with orange head, neck and chest in breeding plumage and dull grey-brown winter coloration, and distinctive black and white wingbar at all times.
