  1. What happened to its hair? Am I mistaken or is it completely bald? Almost looks like a bronze statue. I am really intrigued! Great pose well captured! Posted 11 years ago
    1. I dont know the reason behind its baldness, Yes, even i felt this one as a statue when I was reveiwing the snaps. But it seems that this chimp felt lonely and was very silently watching the spectators. Looks like he is in deep thinking about his future. Thank you very much Claire. :) Posted 11 years ago
      1. Intrigued, I did a little research. There are two main reports of this chimp at Mysore Zoo, one stating its name is 'Ashes' and is about 15 yrs old, the other states his name is 'Guru' and is around 23 years old. Both however state that he suffers from alopecia (hair loss) and that they have tried many therapies, none of which have worked. Reports say that he was rescued from a circus and was removed from his mother at an early age.
It used to be normal for a mother to be killed in order to take their babies for zoos or as pets and unfortunately this still does happen even though it is now illegal. Trauma and stress of this kind can often trigger alopecia and to date there is no known cure.
It would appear though that this chimp is perfectly happy and his favourite pastime is throwing poo at visitors! I am glad that you were spared that!

        1. I Appreciate your findings clarie, and that was a pretty detailed description. I wonder, how did you dig up so much of information. Please share your research style, I'm very much keen to know about it. Posted 11 years ago, modified 11 years ago
  2. Re Guru/Ashes, well that was a simple Google search on a bald chimp in the location you gave!
Re alopecia, that is something I learned about whilst living in Scotland where it appears to be quite common although no one knows why.
Re primates in general, I have been working with primates for the past four years or so and so have learned a lot in that time. I have a lot of books on primatology and read a lot of the 'scholarly articles' on Google. Although I also work with birds too, primates are my favourite and probably my main area of expertise.

The common chimpanzee, also known as the robust chimpanzee, is a species of great ape. Evidence from fossils and DNA sequencing show both species of chimpanzees are the sister group to the modern human lineage.
