      1. I'm no expert but I actually looked at their feather pattern to differentiate. Plus few Pond Heron live pretty close to my house so I had the luxury to notice them closely. Posted 11 years ago
      2. I also think this one is an Indian Pond Heron. Here you can see different photos of the two species to compare them. From what I can see, the wings of the Pond Heron are almost plain colour with a few stripes on the side, while those of the bittern are more variegated. The stripes on the neck and chest of the bittern are larger and more distinctive. The Pond Heron has a black spot at the end of the beak.

The Indian Pond Heron or Paddybird is a small heron. It is of Old World origins, breeding in southern Iran and east to India, Burma, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. They are widespread and common but can be easily missed when they stalk prey at the edge of small water-bodies or even when they roost close to human habitations.
